The world’s largest car collection: an estimated 7,000 cars parked in several garages, worth more than $5 billion in total. And all of it belongs to the mysterious Sultan of Brunei.

It’s a private collection, so unless you have a close friendship with the ruler of the tiny state off the northern coast of the island of Borneo, you’ll never see the cars. It’s a shame, because there are some wonderful machines, including several one-offs specially commissioned by the Sultan or his equally car-loving younger brother, Prince Jefri,” says spyscape.com.

Hassanal Bolkiah, Brunei’s Sultan

He is considered such an important car collector that he kept the Rolls-Royce factory and Bentley alive during their darkest days. About half of the Rolls-Royces and Bentleys sold in the early and mid-1990s went to the Sultan and his family. Many were custom-built.

Among the cars custom-ordered by the Sultan were six Bentley Dominators, the company’s first SUV (20 years before the Bentayga). Like so many Brunei cars, this was a secret project and only came to public attention when a photographer took a photo of the car being loaded onto a cargo plane bound for Brunei.

Other cars in the Emperor’s garage include a 1996 Bentley Buccaneer (a sports coupe), as well as the Bentley Camelot, Phoenix, Imperial, Rapier, Pegasus, Silverstone and Spectre. If you’re not familiar with these nameplates, don’t worry, Bentley never officially produced them. They were individual and confidential commissions. The Sultan and his family are estimated to own 380 Bentleys in total.

The 600-strong Rolls-Royce fleet includes unique and secret vehicles such as the Royale, Majestic and Cloudesque, all large and extravagant limousines. The details are only really known thanks to a few Southeast Asian paparazzi and the few tourists who have happened to catch a glimpse of the royal family driving around. One of the Rolls-Royces that was seen by several people was a Silver Spur II used at the Sultan’s wedding. This was no ordinary piece, however, as it was plated in 24-carat gold.

Ferrai F40

Other notable vehicles include special order Ferraris – including a 456 GT Venice (a station wagon of which Prince Yefri ordered six), a 1988 F90 supercar and a 1995 FX (the Sultan ordered six).

Rare but not made-to-order Ferraris include a 250 GTO, of which he owns two. And the F40, arguably one of the most exciting Ferraris, of which he has eleven in his garage.
